RaffiaLuxe is a little different to our usual yarns- but it is such a strong look at the moment, and one I have always loved for Summer, I couldn’t resist it!
Whilst it may not strictly fit into the ‘Chunky’ Category, it looks absolutely great in our chunky cotton patterns, with one or two tweaks here and there- so I will share the hacks with you in their own blog posts.
It is ideal for crochet, knit and weaving- with a hook/ needle size of 4-10.
Experiment with holding 2 strands together, combining colours, or even holding with a different textured yarn for different looks and finishes.
You can find loads of patterns on Etsy, if you want to try a finer project.
So What exactly is Raffia?
Well, it is categorised as a paper yarn- but not it’s not like the white A4 that we’re used to. It is made from the Raffia palm, and has great natural strength.
It is ideal for bags and baskets because of this strength- but it can make it a little harder to work with. I would definitely recommend taking regular breaks if crocheting with this yarn- it does not have the spring of a wool yarn, and is a little harder on your hands, but the results are so worth it!
Raffia has a natural resistance to water. However the fibre itself is not considered waterproof. If soaked, or left damp for a period of time, it has the potential to degrade, and perhaps transfer colour. So you’ll be OK in a short shower (this is British summer after all!) but don’t pop your soggy swimming cossie, and wet beach towel inside.
You can spot clean with a soft cloth, and allow to air dry.
It’s absolutely ideal for accessories: bags, hats, belts- and homewares: baskets, placemats, plant hangers.
